Techniques Used For Liposuction
Tumescent Technique
This technique has developed into the most popular of all the liposuction techniques used today. A very large amount of fluid is injected into the section of the body from which fat will be removed. The fluid contains several medications, including lidocaine which provides local anesthesia, and usually another medication that works to constrict blood vessels and thus reduce blood loss. Normally a medication like epinephrine is used.
A salt solution is also included, and this makes removal of fat easier. The fatty tissue tends to harden in the presence of the saline solution, and this makes its removal easier. Of course the doctor will use a cannula, or tube-like device that moves around under the skin and breaks up fat which is then taken out of the body by suction. Although this is the most popular of all the liposuction techniques because it causes less bruising and faster healing, it can take a long time, perhaps four or five hours, and of course this increases the expense of the procedure.
The Super Wet Technique
This procedure is a lot like the tumescent procedure, but there are several differences Less liquid solution is used. Lidocaine can be used in the solution, but the procedure is sometimes undertaken after the patient has been given a general anesthetic or an epidural anesthetic via IV. One advantage to this technique is that it takes just an hour or two.
Power Liposuction
Power liposuction is another fairly new technique that uses a special cannula that has a small motor attached that moves very rapidly and causes the fat deposits to disperse quicker. It is said that about 40% more fat can be removed in a given period of time and so the total operation goes much quicker. It is also said to give smoother results.
UAL- Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction
This is a fairly new procedure that uses a cannula that produces ultrasound energy. Fat cells are liquefied by this energy and suctioned out of the body. This technique can take longer than other liposuction methods but it can be more precise. One disadvantage is that the process generates heat, and the doctor needs to be careful not to cause burns on the patient.
